Eamonn Holmes has spoken openly about feeling “humiliated” amid his current health problems.
The North Belfast man spoke to Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast about his feelings and how being dependent on other people is “the scariest thing”.
He also explained that “you can have all the money in the world and if your health deteriorates, it is not good for you”.
Eamonn has suffered from severe back pain in recent years and underwent back surgery at the end of September 2022.
The 63-year-old later fell down an escalator while recovering from surgery and required shoulder surgery.
Speaking on the podcast, Eamonn said: “Your health is your wealth, I mean that’s what struck me over the last seven years.
“Seven years ago I had a double hip replacement and that’s when everything started to go wrong for me.
“I mean, once your health starts to decline…you can have all the money in the world, and if your health declines, it’s not good for you.
“Mobility and simple fun.”
He added: “My legs are not supporting me at the moment. Hopefully things will get better and things will change, but yeah, I’m jealous of people in really good health right now – because anyway.”
Also on the podcast, Kaye told the TV host: “It must have been a big shock … because you spent your whole life being able to go where you wanted, when you wanted, do what you wanted and then you know you, you are prevented.”
Eamonn replied: “Yes, you’re restricted from playing with the dog, you’re restricted from playing with your grandchild, you’re restricted from just socialising.
“And besides – the scariest thing is being dependent on other people…
“Depending on someone to bring you a cup of tea, take something out of the fridge, give you the TV remotes, sometimes take you to the bathroom to…
“There are so many things it’s demoralizing to ask.
“And there’s only so many times you can say, ‘Karen, can you get it for me,’ “Karen, I’m sorry to ask you,” “Kaye, you won’t give it to me, will you?” And you are dependent….
“And when Kaye decides, ‘I’m tired of giving you stuff, get it yourself’ or whatever, it’s very humbling…
“You are grateful. The other is loneliness..”
