King Charles III is getting his own James Bond story as a special gift from his crown, with the famous spy now appearing on Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

The coronation, which will take place on May 6 at Westminster Abbey, has already been marked with the first portrait of the new king, which was unveiled earlier this week.

It has now been revealed that writer and actor Charlie Higson has been commissioned to write a new 007 story to celebrate the King’s upcoming coronation.

Higson, 64, is the author of the Young Bond series, which follows Bond as a teenager at Eton College before receiving his license to kill.

The book was commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications and will be published on May 4, two days before the big event.

The book comes 60 years after the publication of James Bond creator Ian Fleming’s novel On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – the tenth in the series.

The new story will bring Bond back to the present as he is tasked with thwarting a last-minute attempt to disrupt the ceremony.

Higson said: “Ian Fleming Publications came to me just over a month ago and I was delighted – until I realized it had to be ready for the Coronation in May.”

He continued: “Writing it in such a short space of time was as exciting and heartbreaking as any other Bond mission. Although no one would actually shoot me.”

“I thought about writing a grown-up Bond adventure [for a while] – he bursts out of me with flying fists. It was all I could do to keep up with him and get his story on paper.”

All royalties from the sale of the book, entitled On His Majesty’s Secret Service, go to the National Literacy Trust.

Corinne Turner, managing director of Ian Fleming Publications said: “The coronation of King Charles III. is an important event for the country.

“On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was published first [60 years ago]. What better way to mark this new chapter in history than with a brand new story: On His Majesty’s Secret Service?’

“We shared our thoughts with Charlie and he happily accepted the challenge of writing a Bond adventure in time for its release in May.”

The new story is available digitally from May 4 as an e-book, as an audiobook – read by Charlie Higson – and in hardcover, online and in bookshops.
