The new movie hits theaters on New Year’s Day, but is it worth watching?

Here’s everything you need to know about The Danish Girl (15).

why is

The Danish Girl is a fictionalized account of Lili Elbe, a pioneer of the transgender movement who was one of the first to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Born Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), she gradually realized that she was a woman trapped in a man’s body. But in the 1920s it was unknown and such an operation had never been undertaken before.

Taking the form of the resourceful Lili Elbe with the flaming hair, Einar confronts a deep-seated belief that he was born in the wrong body.

Supported by his artist wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and his childhood friend Hans Axgil (Matthias Schoenaerts), Lili turns to the controversial surgeon Warnekros (Sebastian Koch) to correct nature’s mistake.

However, the medical procedure is both experimental and very dangerous, and not only could Gerda lose her husband on the operating table, but also Lili.
