The leader of the employer, on the criticism of the salary: “It’s the same when they say in a rape case that the girl was wearing a miniskirt”
The head of the employers’ association, Antonio Garamendi, this Wednesday defended his new salary of almost €400,000 a year, responding to criticism he has received over his increase. “It’s like when there’s a rape and they say the girl was in a miniskirt. No”, he said even before rejecting the president of Galician businessmen. According to Garamendi, it is becoming the object of a “cake campaign” against businessmen. – Today is my turn, – he complained.
The Basque businessman defended his pay as a “personal” decision with “total transparency” and “freedom” made by CEOE’s board of directors, which has more than 200 members. “It’s not four and five,” he emphasized.
The truth is that the employers do not publish their president’s salary as required by the Articles of Association, and this has been revealed by leaks to the media.
3% or 9% salary increase?
Since this salary, who previously worked as a freelancer and will now receive a salary as a salary, is not directly published, several unknowns. For example, what is the increase that was agreed this year, inflation-adjusted, and when the employers’ association refused the state agreement to raise wages and raise the minimum wage.
Various media reported an increase of about 9%, according to employer sources. A member of the employer explained to elDiario.es that the increase was around 7%: a 3% increase was foreseen for the entire workforce, plus a renewal of previous years’ growth.
The CEO’s official version, and which Antonio Garamendi reiterated this Wednesday, is that his pay has increased the same as that of the rest of the employer’s workers: 3%. “It is a lie, it is a lie that my salary has increased by 50,000 euros,” he said.
He also denied any wrongdoing as he previously received this pay as a freelancer and that he is now employed by CEOE’s payroll department. Garamendi calls the information gathered by the boss leader “pretty bad grapes”.
“smear campaign”
According to Antonio Garamendi, the criticism of his salary is part of a “campaign to discredit the business world”. The executive director claims that the continuous “attacks on the businessman, one, the other… this week it was my turn,” he assessed.
As for the almost €400,000 in compensation, Garamendi notes that it may seem like “one amount or another” to people: “but it is what it is, published and approved by the board of directors” and “everything is managed from a point of view. Completely transparent.”
To the questions of elDiario.es, the CEO answered these days that he does not intend to publish Antonio Garamendi’s salary in the annual reports, because they are already included in other broader concepts and this “corresponds” to the required transparency. Its charter states: “The president may or may not have a salary, and if so, it must be approved by the board of directors and published in the audited annual accounts.”
